Wall cactus uses a single domestic material, stainless steel sewing needles, fixed directly into the wall. The shadows cast by the needles contribute to the grid based arrangement and overall pattern complexity.
This work indulges in minimalism, and the simple possibilities of pattern making. But it also takes inspiration from the homemakers who spend many hours carefully selecting, arranging, cleaning, mending and potting for comfort and satisfaction.
Ruth Feeney contests perceptions of function, security and familiarity in the home and encourages viewers to consider these ideas and materials from a new perspective.
